Repercussions of Preventive Social Isolation in older adults
An exploratory study
Abstract
Objectives: Due to the COVID-19, many countries have taken isolation measures to reduce and avoid the spread of the virus. This research aims to provide a description of the preventive and social isolation’s consequences, according to relatives, on older people in the province of Mendoza, Argentina.
Materials and methods: exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional research. It has a sample of 65 adults from the province of Mendoza, who have regular contact with at least one older person. The research instrument was an ad-hoc questionnaire with open and ended questions that asked for socio-demographic data of interviewees, as well as cognitive, behavioral and emotional changes in the elderly.
Research and conclusions: a high percentage of participants (84. 6%) reported an affectation in older people’s daily activities. At a psychological level, approximately half of the sample revealed an increase of loneliness, sadness feelings and excessive worry in elderly. Furthermore, a high percentage also reported that older people have been able to find new activities to realize during the isolation period, alone or helped by their families; and this is related to low levels of sadness. The results obtained emphasized the importance of working with family ties and being creative with new routines in this situation.
