Effect of Socioemotional Competences on Positive Development in Mexican High School Adolescents
Abstract
Adolescence was traditionally associated with conflict, the Positive Youth Development (PYD) approach conceives adolescents as having strengths, individual, family, school and social health and well-being. On the other hand, socio-emotional competencies determine the expression, understanding of oneself and others to relate and face daily challenges. The aim of the present study was to determine the predictive character of socio-emotional competences on positive youth development in adolescent high school students. A correlational cross-sectional study was carried out with 3,869 upper high school students from 32 schools of a public university in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. We use the instrument to evaluate the positive development of the adolescent population of Mexico, and the short version of the emotional quotient inventory (EQi-S), at which we added general mood dimension of the Inventory of Socio-emotional Competences for Adolescents. A linear regression analysis by gender was carried out with the dimensions of positive youth development as dependent variables and socio-emotional competencies as predictors. The models explained from 22% to 53% of the variance. General mood showed the greatest influence on PYD (β from .203 to .492; p < .001). In the group of men, the adaptability dimension stood out (β from .059 to .240; p de < .05 a < .001); while in women intrapersonal competences highlighted (β from .121 to .214; p < .001). Results and implications are discussed from the literature.
Keywords: positive youth development, socio-emotional competences, adolescents, sex.
