Abstract

The objective of the following research consisted of: a) relating the different temperamental styles with self-esteem during childhood, b) analyzing the association of self-esteem with socioeconomic status (SES) (i.e., type of occupation and educational level). We worked with a sample of 101 children from 7 to 10 years old (M= 8.61, SD= 1.08, female= 50) belonging to different provinces of Argentina. An ad-hoc sociodemographic questionnaire and two parental reports were applied: the Middle Childhood Temperament Questionnaire (MCTQ) and the Self-Esteem subscale, version for parents (KINDL-R). It was found that the temperamental dimensions related to extraversion and effortful control were positively associated with the reported levels of self-esteem of the children, while the subscales related to the expression of negative affect in a negative way. No associations were found between self-esteem and SES. It is concluded that it is necessary to work with parenting styles taking into account the temperamental characteristics of children, in order to promote their self-esteem.
