Abstract
This investigation had the objective of identifying different motives for Instagram’s use, as stated by its own users, with the purpose of establishing individual differences between the different groups according to normal, psychopathological and positive personality variables. An automatic method of text analysis (LDA) was performed. The sample consisted of 694 participants (293 men and 399 women) with an average of 37.55 years (DE= 13.83). BFI, PID-5, High Five Inventory and a survey designed ad-hoc for evaluating motives of Instagram’s usage were employed for data recollection. Three main motives were found: firstly, it was linked to a social motivation, secondly to a work use, and thirdly it was connected to social motivations and informational purposes. Regarding differences on personality traits, the users of the first group perceived themselves as being highly neurotic and had a bigger presence of dysfunctional traits. The second group was ranked highly in extraversion, responsibility, openness to experience and neuroticism. High scores on extraversion, likability, responsibility, honesty and tenacity, as well as a low rate of neuroticism and openness to experience were found in the third group.
