PILOT STUDY OF A PROGRAM TO PROMOTE MOTIVATION TOWARDS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: MAFYS
Abstract
Background: Many psychological interventions have shown their usefulness in promoting adherence to healthy habits in adults, but we do not have local protocols aimed at increasing motivation towards physical activity (PA). Objectives: To present the design and results of the pilot study of the Motivation, Physical Activity and Health (Motivación, Actividad Física y Salud [MAFyS]) program based on the Self-Determination Theory and the Transtheoretical Model to promote motivation towards PA in sedentary adults. Method: 16 adults between 18-65 years old (M = 38.56; SD = 10.71) residents of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area participated. Symptoms of depression and anxiety, psychopathological risk, quality of life, motivation towards PA and levels of PA were evaluated with the instruments: SCL-27, BDI-II, STAI, ICV, EQ-5D, BREQ-3, IPAQ, and the GoogleFit® mobile app. Results: Statistically significant differences were found with a high effect size in terms of depressive symptoms, psychopathological risk, motivation and PA levels. Conclusions: MAFyS could be useful to increase motivation towards PA and promote mental health, although it is necessary to continue researching and replicating this work in larger and more representative samples, to evaluate its level of efficacy at the local level.
