Abstract

This qualitative empirical research with a narrative design aims to explore, within the scope of vocational guidance, the relationship between pre-retirement life plans and the activities carried out by retired female early childhood education teachers in the city of Neuquén. To gather these data, semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve female early childhood teachers who had been retired for more than five years, gaining insight into the obstacles and facilitators they encountered in developing their planned projects during their pre-retirement period.
The results reveal that none of the interviewees reported having made plans for specific activities prior to retirement, although they did have expectations regarding enjoying free time, recreational activities, spending time with family and friends, and traveling. Furthermore, they did not have any paid work and did not plan to return to work. Most women feel their expectations were met and that they did not face any major obstacles, recognizing financial stability, free time, and the ability to coordinate travel and activities with their retired husbands as facilitators. Regarding their opinions on retirement, most stated that they wanted to retire, as they mentioned having reached the end of their working careers with significant physical and mental strain associated with teaching, especially working with young children. Finally, none of the women interviewed participated in a vocational guidance process, although most acknowledged that it would have been helpful.
